In a press conference this morning, Michael Kaiser, President of the Kennedy Center announced the full 2013/14 season, which includes a world premiere by Jessica Lang with the National Symphony Orchestra.

“Two other co-commissions will be featured in NEW MOVES: Symphony + Dance, a two-week festival of three programs of American music. Each program features new American musical works, as well as newly commissioned choreography from contemporary dance artists such as Larry Keigwin, Jessica Lang, and jookin’ artists from the New Ballet Ensemble.”

Lang will create a new work for her own company, Jessica Lang Dance to John Adam’s Violin Concerto, to be performed with the National Symphony Orchestra and soloist Leila Josefowicz, at the Kennedy Center’s Concert Hall on May 16 and 17, 2014.

Choreographer Jessica Lang’s Lyric Pieces commissioned and performed by Birmingham Royal Ballet has been nominated for a coveted Manchester Theatre Award in the Dance category.

The awards are the largest of their kind outside London, and they recognize the work of several leading local names as well as some of the top international entertainment to grace the region over the last year. The panel that chooses the awards, consisting of nine independent regional theater critics who attended numerous productions throughout the region, has shortlisted 19 categories, ranging from drama and opera to musical theater and dance. Other works nominated in the dance category include that of choreographers Matthew Bourne and Hofesh Shechter.

Lyric Pieces marked Lang’s first commission by a European dance company and received its premiere at the International Dance Festival Birmingham last May before continuing on the company’s North – East Tour and earning a Manchester Theatre Award nomination along the way. In the fall, Birmingham Royal Ballet performed Lang’s stunning work at the Birmingham Hippodrome and Sadler’s Wells in London. Coming up, Lyric Pieces is programmed on the company’s South – West Tour beginning May 2014. Lauded as “incredibly fresh and alive” and “an engaging and visually dynamic creation,” Lyric Piecesreceived rave reviews, leaving critics such as Judith Mackrell of The Guardian “impatient” to see more of Lang’s work in the future.

The winners will be revealed at a reception and awards ceremony at the Manchester Opera House on Tuesday, March 26, 2013.
